Dr Ian Newey enjoys portfolio employment in a number of settings in Norfolk, including work at a private acute mental health hospital, at a service for adopted, fostered and neurodiverse children, at a charity supporting bereaved children and in private practice.
Ian achieved a B.Sc.(Hons) in Psychology at the University of Wales, Bangor in 1993, an M.Sc. in Health Sciences at the University of East Anglia in 1998 and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (Clin.Psy.D.) at the University of East Anglia in 2001.
Ian is a member of the Division of Clinical Psychology and the Faculty for Children, Young People & their Families. He is a BPS Chartered Psychologist, is HCPC Registered and has nearly thirty years of clinical experience.
Ian has a special interest in helping people understand the social and psychological factors that have led to their difficulties and has particular expertise working with people with a history of trauma, invalidation, and abuse.
Ian has training in EMDR, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Mindfulness and Compassion Focused Therapy. Some of these skills are useful for children on the autistic spectrum and children with complicated attachments, including children who have been in care, and those who have been adopted into loving families with “forever” parents.
Ian is a proud father by adoption of a Black African daughter and has developed an interest in the impact of “race” on mental wellbeing. He is a member of the BPS PTMF committee.
